Every time I look at something, I think about how it is made. I analyse the functionality of a product and look at all the details. For me the design process is finding good solutions to problems of functionality and durability. I try to eliminate all unnecessary decorations in my designs and seek to find the pure essence of the design and the functionality.
And then comes the craft. I has taken me many years to learn the leather craft. I have taken a few courses, but I am mostly a self-taught leather artisan. I design all products myself and do the manufactering too.
All my leather work is an exploration of the possibilities and limitations of the leather craft. It is the sense of the material and how it should be processed. I love handsewing leather and prefer sewing rather than rivets. I like to use modern tools and methods, but enjoy performing the old craft.
Elisabeth Wildt
Designer / Maker
I chose the name BY WILDT because it refers to the fact that all designs and products are made by me, Elisabeth Wildt.
The concept behind BY WILDT is inspired by Slow Living. For me Slow Living is about doing things properly and taking the time to make things right. It concerns both the design and the crafts. I always choose the most durable craft tecnique and not the cheapest and fastest to make. I prefer needlework to rivets, and use a lot of reinforcing materials in all joints and straps, even though it is not allways visible. I only make things that make sense to me, products that can be used for many years.
I only use high quality materials for my products. All the leather that I use comes from tanneries in Italy or France. The natural tanned leather will age beautifully with a darker and deeper tan. The black leather will keep its color for many years without fading.
The hardware that I use is durable with a hard (allmost) scrath free surface. It will last long and stay beautiful. All hardware for my bracelets are nickel free.
